Everyday Holy

EVERYDAY Holy

By Bobbie Schaeperkoetter

I began January back at the beginning, in Genesis.  As I’m reading though the Old Testament, I feel like I’m seeing things with new eyes.  I am looking through the lens of EVERYDAY  EVERY DAY, and this way of reading is rocking my world!

For example, today I read a passage that I’ve read countless times, but it struck me in a fresh way.  I’d love to share it with you.

Exodus 3:1-5 NIV

“Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.””

This was just an everyday kind of day. Moses was just tending his flocks as usual. This was just an everyday bush.  Moses had probably walked in this place a hundred times before, maybe even every day as he took the sheep to pasture.

But God was with Moses there. He’d been there every day, leading and guiding and intervening and working behind the scenes to prepare and equip and draw Moses closer.  And in the midst of this everyday moment, God revealed himself to Moses.

God is always with us and he shows up in our everyday, sometimes in ways and places we least expect it.

How do we respond when we notice something amazing, like a sunrise, a smile, an unexpected grace, a divine connection, a Holy Spirit prompting, an image bearer in need…?

Do we lean in and look for God, the Creator and Sustainer, or are we too busy to stop and notice that we are always treading on holy ground because God is always with us?  He surrounds us and speaks to us in our everyday moments, inviting us to turn out hearts and minds and attention to him every day.

God makes things holy.  And if God is in all, over all, and above all and if all things belong to him… then isn’t there a little bit of holy in everything if we have eyes to see God in it?

Doesn’t everything point back to God if we choose to really look for him in everything?  Shouldn’t we be able to see glimpses of God in the people we meet and the things we experience?

I wonder what it would look like to be a holiness hunter- someone who is on the lookout every day for the holy fingerprint of God in the everyday?

Prayer:

God, give us eyes to look for glimpses of you every day amid the everyday moments of our lives.  Help us to see you.  As we are turned toward you, giving you our attention, we ask that you speak.  Help us to listen and to hear you.  Thank you that you are always with us and that you always invite us to be with you.  Amen.

Journal Reflection:

What would look like for you to be a holiness hunter- someone who is on the lookout every day for the holy fingerprint of God in the everyday?

Practice:

Take a walk around your neighborhood, workplace, or even around your home.  As you walk, be a holiness hunter.  Where do you see God’s fingerprints?  Where do you see evidence of his love, care, grace, mercy, and compassion?  How might he be speaking to you as you walk?
