Worship Every Day

As a part of my daily rhythm, I begin my time mornings by taking a few minutes to be still and worship God for who he is and what he’s done.  There are several ways that I love to do that, and in today’s devotional, I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce you to a few of them.  Maybe one or two of them will feel like a good fit and will become a part of your regular rhythm with God.

 

1.  I love to begin my day with my eyes on the sky. 

The way the light crests the horizon and paints everything in soft gold reminds me that God’s mercies are new every morning and that his faithfulness is great! 

 

Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV says this, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

What a gift that God begins each morning with such a display of his glory!  Standing on my porch with a steaming mug of coffee in hand as I watch the light dissolve the darkness changes my perspective. 

 

John 1:5 NIV reminds us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

As silly as it may seem, sometimes I even whisper these verses into the brisk morning air as a tribute of praise and worship to our good and present God. 

 

2.  I love to praise God for his creation.

Some mornings, I lace up my tennis shoes, leash my dog, and head out into the soft light of the morning to walk.  I don’t turn on music or a podcast.  Instead, I look for the beauty in God’s creation all around me and as I do, I see the hand of a God who loves humankind enough to create a multitude of flowers, deep green grass, burbling creeks, curious puppies, melodic birds, puffy clouds, and a million other beautiful things that create joy. 

 

Luke 12:27-28 NIV calls us to “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!”

As I take in God’s creation, I worship him for his abundant and extravagant love.

 

3.  I love to think of reasons to be grateful.

God has been so good to all of us.  We could while away the hours simply sitting and making a list of the ways God has provided, protected, cared for, been present to, been merciful and compassionate to, and been faithful to us.

 

Psalm 145:10-13 says, “All your works praise you, Lord; your faithful people extol you. They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might, so that all people may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.”

Most mornings, I journal out three gratitudes.  I worship God for his generosity and his care. 

 

4.  I love to worship through music.

Some mornings just call for a little kitchen worship concert.  God has gifted incredible artist with beautiful lyrics and melodies to turn our hearts towards praise.  Join them in their worship. 

 

Ephesians 5:19-20 NIV tells us that we should be “speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing(ing) and mak(ing) music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

I turn the music up and sing along, praising and worshipping God.

 

5.  I love to worship by saying my ABC’s.

My friend Becky Harling taught me a little trick years ago and it has become one of my favorite ways to worship.  When I want to spend a little time dwelling on the character of God, I say my ABC’s.  At each letter, I think of an attribute of God to praise him for.

 

A- God, you are awesome.  B- You are benevolent.  C-  God, you care for all people.  D- God, you are my Deliverer. 

 

James 1:17 NIV says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

While this is a small list of some of my favorite ways to begin my day with worship, there are so many ways to worship.  God is so good.  You can worship however, wherever, and whenever because as our hearts are drawn to him, the natural overflow is praise and worship.   

 

 

 

Prayer

Father God, thank you for who you are and what you’ve done.  Thank you for your goodness, your love, your care, your mercy, and your compassion.  Thank you for your provision and protection.  You are great, and greatly to be praised.  Lord, turn our hearts to worship you for alone are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive all glory and honor.  Amen.
