Everyday Miracles

I won’t sugar coat it.  February was a hard month in our home, but it was an especially hard month for my son.  Early in the month, while driving to school, another driver didn’t see him and crossed an intersection and hit him.  Everyone involved was ok, but it was a bad accident and his car was totaled.

About a week later, my husband took him on a guys get away weekend to go skiing in Colorado.  My son was in a snowboarding accident and badly broke and dislocated his collar bone.  He had to fly home to see a surgeon and have a plate and screws put in to repair his clavicle.

Tomorrow is three weeks post-surgery, but for the last week or so my son has been telling me that he believes that God healed his collar bone.  He even began taking off his stability sling and using his arm, although I cautioned him against it.

In all honesty, I was fearful.  I didn’t want him to reinjure himself.  Every time I got on to him about it, he told me that God had healed him and he wasn’t having any pain or loss of movement.

I didn’t want to doubt his faith, but I was also worried he’d hurt himself further.  I finally just told him that I agreed God could heal him, but to behave like his collar bone was still broken until the doctor told him he was clear to use his arm again.

My son assured me it was healed and he’d get clearance today at his 3 week post op appointment. I wasn’t sure. In fact, I really fought the urge today to prepare him for it to NOT be healed.

And I was wrong.  He got his miracle.  His sling is off. He’s cleared to drive and return to most of his regular activities.  The doctor actually took us to see the x-ray and said, “Look. You can’t even really see a fracture anymore.”

Today, I was reminded God still does the impossible.

As I say that, I know he doesn’t have to and that he doesn’t always choose to.  Why God sometimes works a miracle we can see and why he sometimes doesn’t is a part of his mystery and sovereignty.  We can’t manipulate it, control it, or fully understand it.  He is God and we are not.

Although it is inspirational, I’m not writing about my son’s faith staying steadfast in the midst of difficulty.  I’m not even writing about his unswerving belief in God’s power or about my doubt, fear, and worry.  This is a reminder that God is still in the business of working everyday miracles.

We need to be reminded of that because sometimes in our hustle and bustle, we forget.

The verse of the day today on the YouVersion Bible app is 1 Chronicles 16:24 NLT.  It says, “Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.”

So, that’s what I am doing. There’s just one simple thing I hope you take away from this… when God moves in your life in an undeniable way, don’t be afraid to share it.

Maybe you’ve experienced his peace in a way that doesn’t make sense because of what you’re going through.  It could be that he has provided when you wondered if you’d be without.  It might have been the way he has changed your heart and your life.  Maybe he’s shown you mercy and love when you expected judgement.  It could be a multitude of things because our God is good and is always doing good.  It’s impossible to name all of the little everyday miracles he works in our lives every day.

Whatever the situation and whatever the circumstances, he is worthy of our praise.  He is deserving of all glory.  And when we talk about the amazing things that he’s done for us, it has the power to strengthen faith and renew hope.

Prayer

God, help us to recognize the little everyday miracles sprinkled throughout every day of our lives.  Help us to speak often of your goodness to us.  May our testimony of praise strengthen the faith of others and renew their hope.  Amen.

Scripture Meditation

Journal Reflection

What are some of the everyday miracles you’ve experienced in your life?  Can you think of times where the only explanation is God?  What did that look like?  Who did you share it with?

Practice

Open a note on your phone or put a paper and pen someplace you will see it throughout the day.  Every time you think of a blessing, jot it down.  See how many blessings you can notice in a day or a week.
